Stay: Photo Essay

By Christine Pemberton

A 30 minute drive from the historic bustling Indian city of Jaipur, and you are deep in the Rajasthani countryside, a world of farming and villages and timeless, traditional imagery. It is here, in a village called Sanjharia, that you will find Savista, a hotel with a difference.
Published: 19th September 2017.

The Savista Hotel, Rajasthan

The people who run Savista are quite clear in their vision:
”While we offer all the comforts and services of a hotel, we are determinedly not a typical or chain hotel…Unlike other luxury hotels, at Savista we make a conscious effort to avoid over-the-top ostentation.”
As vision statements go, this is pretty unequivocable.

As part of this commitment to avoid over-the-top ostentation, the focus of Savista is firmly on design aesthetics and rustic elegance. Every room is different, with the inspiration for its decor drawn from nature, and rooms are filled with crafts and antiques hand-picked from all over Rajasthan.

Savista is the ancestral home of the owners, which definitely colours their vision and the ethos of the property. After careers in academia and international development in India and overseas, the owners decided to return home to indulge in a new experiment in sustainable living and experiential travel. Savista is the happy result of that experiment.

The Savista Courtyard and Pool

Savista’s facilities are numerous, including what are considered “standard” top-class hotel comforts such as a pool, spa, fitness centre. But also, in keeping with their commitment to experiential travel more unusual fare is on offer. Block printing workshops, anyone? Or perhaps a camel cart ride through the countryside? .

The grounds at the Savista Hotel

Nestled in the countryside, this eco-retreat is a 12-acre estate of trees, gardens, fields and birds. The guiding philosophy is farm-to-fork: the estate grows its own vegetables and grains, free from chemical fertilisers and pesticides; and the milk is from buffaloes fed on the estate’s grass.

The Kumaon hotel is situation high on a ridge

Savista wants to share as many experiences as possible with their guests, especially those involving local and traditional handicrafts.
So if you have ever wanted to try your hand at traditional crafts such as pottery, now is the time.
The village potter comes to the hotel and guests can spend a few hours learning the age-old craft, using methods that have remained unchanged for centuries.

Printmaking at the Savista hotel

Savista offers its guests some totally unique experiences – such as learning textile hand block printing from the traditional artisans of Bagru village. The quality of the water, soil and plant resources of this region all had a role to play in the evolution of the craft, which has been practised for at least 350 years

Printmaking at the Savista hotel

Hand block printing with the artisnas of Bagru is not a “made for tourists” experience.
The master craftsperson with whom Savista works, is a fifth generation printer who has his own traditional print studio. Workshop participants learn first-hand to print on cotton fabric, using hand-carved wooden blocks of their choice, and custom-made vegetable and mineral-based dyes.

Camels at the Savista Hotel

Camels are an iconic (& photogenic) part of the Rajasthani way of life, and at Savista you can explore the surrounding countryside in traditional style & in a totally non-touristy way. The pace is more lesisurely, too.

Cooking at the Savista Hotel

If ever you wanted to learn about Indian food and cooking, Savista can provide insights, and shopping trips to the grain and spice markets, as well as hands-on sessions, preparing traditional dishes.

Village life near the Savista Hotel

Combining luxury and all possible comforts while encouraging its guests to explore and – possibly – step out of their own comfort zone, Savista aims to provide unique insights into village life as well as providing lasting memories.
