Stay: Photo Essay

By Christine Pemberton

Whilst we have nothing at all against frills and furbelows, there is definitely something to be said for a minimalist, pared-down look. Which is why we love the brand new kid on the block in the pink city of Jaipur, in India’s Rajasthan.
Welcome, 28 Kothi.

This boutique guesthouse only opened its doors in mid-January, so it is absolutely brand new and raring to go.

After just a few days, the guesthouse is already marking itself out as being different from your run-of-the-mill properties. Not only is the food on offer to their guests strictly vegetarian. It is strictly organic vegetarian.

28 Kothi was originally set up by jewellery designer Munnu Kasliwal, of Jaipur’s famous Gem Palace, for his guests and collaborators from around the world.

In its new avatar, 28 Kothi is now run by Munnu’s son Siddharth Kasliwal, and Abhishek Honawar, who is Mumbai/NY based.

The guesthouse was built by the French architect Georges Floret and the Jaipur-based Lebanese designer Nur Kaoukji. With India + NYC + France + Lebanon as influences, no wonder 28 Kothi looks effortlessly chic. The simple lines look just perfect.

Yoga, Sanskrit classes, Ayurvedic massages, cultural workshops are all on offer for the guests of 28 Kothi.
We love it already.

28 Kothi Guesthouse, Jaipur Image

There are 2 suites, 2 double rooms and a single room in the guesthouse, so you feel as though you really are in a home not a hotel, which is all part of the idea.

28 Kothi Guesthouse, Jaipur Image

There is a cool, pleasing aesthetic to the guesthouse and a sense of space - almost languor. We love the roomy bathroom with dappled natural light.

The colour palette of 28 Kothi is designed to be soothing and easy on the eye. Cool restful tones with just a tiny splash of colour.

About as far as you could get from the ubiquitous highly-decorated, so-called “Mughal” style of many Rajasthani hotels, 28 Kothi welcomes travellers who want to unwind in pared down simplicity.
