The Voice of Timeless Ellora

Siddhartha Chakraborti,
Jawaharlal Nehru University

It was the usual traffic of tourists and amateur photographers, foreigners and Indians circuiting through the timeless eternity of Ellora under that hot Maharashtrian sun that quenched the thirst for movement even from the dust motes playing at the doorway. I have stood in silence in this cave by the river from the time I had been carved from the underlying stone by devout monks seeking solitude and peace. I have borne witness to their devotion, to knowledge and to me, and blessed them for the former, while bearing the latter in silence. I have come alive to their sonorous chants, their questions and debates and felt the weight of ideas. But then I was abandoned to die. Even when my dead body was extracted where I lay buried, I did not feel. Sense returned painfully to my form only to reveal the humdrum of the ordinary at best, and those cruel and destructive at worst. My parts were dismantled to be auctioned to the highest bidder and preserved as curios.

It was the usual sound of quarrels, of wonderings and camera shutters, the hums of ventilators circulating fresh air around the cave to let me breathe. Even though my colour has faded, and my parts amputated, motionless and silent, I nonetheless was alive. Then the monks sang again and knowledge vibrated through my entire being. That is when finally I woke up again to the world resonating Wisdom.
