Darjeeling is the Goth of East India

Jelena Savkovic,

Darjeeling is the Goth of East India. As in a tale, life there is built vertically, and gravity plays no role in secrets of everyday pulse. Like Jack upon his Beanstalk, I dared to steal most mysterious frames of Darjeeling night. Pines, houses and spirits strike into vanishing sky, as if the chin of the place was raised towards heavens with eyes peacefully closed in deep sleep.

Dark beauty crawled the walls of concrete that dotted the zigzag uphill roads. The silence of night was immense. I confess, if I’d been alone, I certainly wouldn’t have dared to boldly dig those treks. But as I did, I fed them so tightly with stories, local and global, yet unheard of. It was a night when you feel that life is doing exactly what you wanted, before you dared to want it. If I‘d ever known what the end of the road would gift me with, there on the top of a hill hidden in moonlit nights, wrapped in echoes of faraway howling street dogs, I wouldn’t have believed my soul a word. Depth between me and blurry city lights rising from the footsteps, shimmered to greet me. Darjeeling was flirting. As if standing on the top of a needle, ready to soak the abyss that waited for me, Zakir Husain Rd left me anything but regretting late arrival. I was seduced by a vampire. It was the taste of unexpected fullness of my each current and future bite of Darjeeling.
