Stay: Video & Photo Essay

By Christine Pemberton

Imagine a getaway so beautiful, so tranquil and so focused on making its guests switch off and unwind that they actively encourage you to (literally) switch off your mobile phone.
Imagine a place high in the Himalayas with views to die for and no TV. With communal dining tables, to encourage guests to get to know each other.
We at bringhomestories.com liked the sound of this, and we definitely liked what we saw in the recently opened “Rakkh”, a boutique lodge in Himachal Pradesh.
Published: 8th July 2016. Video: 2nd February 2017.

Rakkh Hill Cottages at Dusk

According to the people behind Rakkh the resort is “a refuge for those who yearned for a more authentic experience of life in the mountains by offering a unique boutique hotel in the heart of a Himachal unsullied by the negative effects of mass tourism.”

View to Rakkh Mountain Cottages

From its origins as a single cabin surrounded by a deodar forest, Rakkh has evolved to a peaceful retreat of 17 rooms. One thing hasn't changed, however. The view. It is as breathtaking as it always was.

Hiking at Rakkh

Rakkh’s philosphy is pretty simple and straightforward. They want their guests to reconnect with what truly makes us happy. Family. Friendship. Nature. Togetherness.

Evening view to Rakkh Hill Cottages

Rakkh is located in the heart of Kangra District, shadowed by the Dhauladar Range, and is a world away from many of the overly-commericalised tourist hubs of the state.

Rakkh Picking tea with workers

We could not have put this better than the good folk at Rakkh did – “Rakkh Resorts enjoys the unique distinction of being mercifully removed from the mainstream.” They encourage their guests to hang out with the villagers, experiencing something of their life.

Feast at Rakkh

Dhaam (meaning “Feast” in the local language) is not only a place for good food but also for views over the mountain ranges. Food for the soul, in other words.

The Universe is not made of atoms

The universe is not made of atoms. It’s made of tiny stories…and it’s precisely this philosophy that encourages guests at Rakkh to explore, to talk, to sit and chat with the villagers, to hear the different stories.

Cycling for families at Rakkh

For city dwellers, the peace and quiet and the empty village roads are an invitation to get out and explore.

Lone Paraglider at Rakkh

Of course, you can always go for the adrenalin rush if you wish.

Reading, thinking, reflecting at Rakkh

Reading, thinking, walking, dreaming - all on the menu at Rakkh.

Roof terrace at Rakkh

But if your idea of perfection is a quiet corner, a glass of wine, and views to fill your soul, then you have just found Paradise.

Bonfire on terrace at Rakkh

There is no better place to unwind and share those all-important stories than around a bonfire, as the magic of the mountains works its charm.
