Offbeat: Photoessay

By Divyanshu Dutta Roy

At an age when it is perfectly acceptable to hang up your boots, seven years ago, Omkarnath merely bought a new pair and started walking the streets of Delhi bringing healthcare to the people for it was least accessible. ‘Hawking’ for unused medicine and earning himself the name of ‘Medicine Baba’, he limps around Delhi with astounding determination and is the shining example of what a person can achieve if he just decides to.

In a place called Manglapuri, one of those parts of Delhi that does not flatter India’s national capital and which tourists never visit, there lives a man doing something truly extraordinary – collecting unused medicine to help those who cannot afford expensive treatments..

A man of extremely humble means ever since he retired from his job, 77-year-old Omkarnath Sharma has been walking the streets of Delhi with his incorrigible resolve to help those who need it the most.

Almost every morning for seven years today, he goes out prospecting for unused medicine in residential neighbourhoods all over the city. “If someone says don’t shout in front of my house, I just walk to the next door and keep on the hawking,” he says cheekily.

You cannot help but revere him once you speak to this man wearing an orange kurta, with an advertisement seeking medicine donations and his phone number splashed across, and travelling only by public transport.

Waiting it out like anybody else and without the slightest sign of recognising the significance of what he is doing, he will disarm you with his humility, his humour and his sheer strength of will – and compel you to question many of the things that you accepted as the way of the world.

With the collected medicine and always with a prior appointment, he himself visits a number of the charitable clinics around the city or hospitals and donates his medicine to them.

Medicine Baba Image

He also runs a small shelter for the medicines and other supplies he collects, carefully catalogued so that when an urgent need arises he can produce all kinds of life-saving pills and tablets and more with amazing efficiency.

His story has reached wide and far and in seven years he has made quite a name for himself. Today people from not just Delhi but also all over the world call him up and say how they can donate to his cause.

And despite all this attention, praise, awards and certificates all he really cares about is his work and his family. Besides the famed medicine baba, he is a husband, a father and a doting grandfather.

“When I went to ask for some help from the government to set up my own medicine bank they tried drown me in red tape and paperwork. I said to hell with that and I simply give away what I collect however I can. All you need is just the will to do something,” he says.
