Bathukamma is the much loved festival of the people of Telangana and is part of their cultural identity.
The festival is spread over a period of nine days and coincides with Dusshera festival. It is the time when monsoon rains bring fresh water to the reservoirs and wild flowers to the fields. The most abundant is the 'Tangedu Poolu" which is also the state flower.During this festival, women gather wild flowers and arrange them in a beautiful pyramid. The pyramid symbolises mother goddess and is called "Bathukamma".
The women dress up in their finest silks and gather in the evenings and sing songs about life and celebration. With modern times, songs of environment are also sung in a chorus. The festival ends with the immersion of Bathukamma in water. It is believed that the medicinal properties of the wild flowers help cleanse the water bodies.
