Nand Kishore Chaudhary Founder of Jaipur Rugs

The story of Jaipur Rugs begins in 1978 when the founder of the company, Nand Kishore Chaudhary gave up a bank job and borrowed Rs. 5000 from his father to start his carpet business. The journey began with 2 looms, 9 weavers and one scooter in Rajasthan.

In the early days, Nand Kishore faced resistance when he installed weavers in his family home. The weavers were from a lower caste, creating a problem for his family. But he persisted, helping the poor and largely uneducated weavers and their families to earn a decent living.

Since Day 1, in 1978, the company has put its weavers first. They have not only given them employment, but have looked at the weavers and their families as a holistic group, training, educating and helping.

The company philosophy is clear. Nand Kishore explains: “When a person buys a rug, he is not just buying a rug….he is buying the food for a poor person.”

“When a person buys a rug, he is not just buying a rug….it is the education of a poor family.”
Education and literacy programmes are provided for the weavers and their families, and are targeted towards the women, many of whom have at long last learned to read and write.
